Pencil Blending Tutorial

I've been wanting to put together a video on pencil blending methods for a while - I finally finished it up last weekend. These are the methods that I cover in the video:

Here's the video! Please let me know what you think, and if you have questions please post them on the video or post them here. I wish I had a video of me talking with my hands and pointing at my computer screen when I was doing the audio - I'm sure that would be amusing!

If you're interested in my video on pencil shading, you can find it HERE. The written tutorial can be found on Splitcoaststampers.

The pencils I used in both videos are Polychromos Pencils. They are oil-based pencils - a little drier than Prismacolors (not waxy), and they don't have the breakage issues either. I looooooove mine and highly recommend them. A teeny sweet reminder, too, that if you order from Dick Blick, please click through to them via the button in my left sidebar if you'd like to swing a little percentage of your purchase my way. That gives me a little extra pencil money once in a while! Thank youuuu!!

Thanks for stopping by!

  3. This is awesome Dina!! I've struggled with pencils, stumps, blending mediums and although I enjoy it very much, it's a time-consuming event in trial and error. This was so helpful!! I'm looking forward to pulling out my pencils very soon!

I am in awe. Your video is so easy to follow. It gives me hope that even I might be able to get acceptable results from pencils one day. You're amazing.

  11. Thanks for the great video. I have never seen 'just pencil' blending before. All of your tips were very useful. When I color with pencils I use baby oil. I have a lot of practicing ahead of me to get something a fraction as nice as yours.

  13. Just watched your tutorial. Beautiful job of coloring. Wish I could do it like you do. Do you have the shading rules some place that could be copies. Would be very useful. Thanks again. Edna

    1. Hi, thank you for watching! That is an older video - I don't remember exactly - it may have been just regular Georgia Pacific cardstock. For my colored pencil work now, I use Crescent white core matboard. I also recommend Strathmore XL Bristol - one side of the paper is rough and one side is smooth, so if you're unsure which you prefer you've got both there to try. I hope that helps!
